In order to make a decision I quite often like to sleep it over. Why does it help to sleep on something? What actually happens if we perceive our consciousness in a different way while sleeping?
Quite a while ago I read a book about sleeping and how we can more easily remember our dreams. I followed the instructions in the book. For a while I put pencil and paper next to my bed to be able to write down my dream memories immediately after waking up. By practicing this for several weeks I let my sub-consciousness know that I wanted to remember my dreams. It was not about holding on to them or keeping them forever.
However, at the beginning I wanted to find out which symbolism was behind my dreams. But I found out there is no universally valid symbolism. At most there are suggestions to orientate ourselves. It is up to us individually to figure out how our innermost Self communicates with us through dreams. However, in order to be able to do so we first need to remember our dreams and this can be practiced.
I personally learn a lot about my sub-consciousness from my dreams. I am given many tips on how I am doing and what is currently relevant in my life. The people who appear in my dreams turn out to be symbolic. Sometimes I remember my dreams quite well and other times I do not. It depends where I am at in my life. However I have got into the habit of briefly reflecting on my dreams when waking up. Then I let go and forget what I dreamt. Useful is to take the essence of the information and keep that. It did happen that I had visions in my dreams that really came true. But I also have some times when I do not remember anything at all.
Well, while we are sleeping a lot is happening. Among other things our Higher Self sorts things out for us and rearranges things. If we have a problem it might be helpful to meditate over it shortly before going to sleep. After having slept on it there might be multiple solutions available the next morning.
We can therefore train to take our consciousness with us into the sleeping phase. Some people even have lucid dreams meaning that they are aware of dreaming while dreaming and thus are able to decide what should further happen in the dream.
Some people go on trips while they are sleeping. And I heard from a friend
that she even sometimes takes her body with her on these trips.
